MACY

“You’re going to be fine, young lady. But you need to get this script for an EpiPen filled.”

The handsome, older black woman handed me the piece of paper. Her dark hair, shot through with gray, was in a bob around her face.

“I will. Thanks, Dr. Hamilton.”

The woman smiled. “It’s my pleasure.” She lowered her voice and glanced at Colt. “I think you’ll have a tougher time calming him down.”

We were in Colt’s warehouse. He was pacing back and forth by the kitchen island. He hadn’t stopped since the doctor had arrived.

“Goodbye, Colton,” Dr. Hamilton said breezily.

He lifted his head. “Thanks, Doc. You sure she’s okay?”

“She’s fine. I’ll send you my bill.”

“Reath has you on retainer.”

“So he does.” She walked past him and squeezed his arm. “Your girl is going to be just fine. Say hi to Daisy from me. I’ll see myself out.”

With another nod, the doctor headed for the stairs.

I pushed my hair behind my ears and watched him. “Colt?”

He kept pacing. “You need something? A drink. Snack?”

I rose. “I could do with a hug.”

He jerked. “I’m not really known for my hugs.”

“I bet Daisy would beg to differ.” I walked over to him and wrapped my arms around his middle. He was so hard, and I listened to the comforting, solid beat of his heart.

He was still for a moment, then wrapped his arms around me. I breathed him in, and felt my tension lowering. But I could still feel his.

“I won’t let Warner get you, Macy.”

“I know. My allergic reaction is not your fault.”

His hands flexed on me. “If I’d been a bit later getting back—”

“Shh.” I slid my hands under his shirt and up his back. “I’m fine.” We stayed like that for a moment. “I take it you didn’t find Scott.”

“Not exactly.”

I knew that evasive tone. I pulled back and looked at him. “What happened?”

“Nothing.” His face was blank.

“Colt.”

He sighed. “When I reached the gym, someone took a shot at me.”

I blinked. “A shot at you?” My heart squeezed. “Like they tried to punch you?”

“No, like with a gun.”

My chest locked. “He shot at you!”

“Macy, calm d—”

I threw my hands in the air. “That crazy asshole tried to kill you!” I shook my head, my anger building. “I did nothing but try to like him, and in return I get this. And now he’s targeting you, as well?”

“Macy.” Colt clamped his hands on my arms. “Take a breath.”

I looked at his handsome face. It wasn’t classically handsome, it was a little too rough around the edges, but it looked perfect to me.

God. What if Scott had managed to shoot Colt?

I pulled in a shaky breath. Colt was looking after me, and I wouldn’t let Scott hurt him.

“Hey, whatever is going on in that head of yours, stop it.”

“Colt…” I just needed to escape all this for a bit. From the look of Colt’s Level 5 scowl and tense shoulders, so did he. “Can we go somewhere? Where there is no Scott? No bullets? Just… Get away for a bit?”

He looked at me for a beat, then nodded.
